Background

Bordered by Nigeria and Chad, the Far North region of Cameroon has been under threat from the Boko Haram terrorist group and has experienced a significant influx of refugees from both Cameroon and Nigeria who are seeking protection from the violence. This isolated, arid and mountainous region is also Cameroon’s poorest.

With the support of Global Affairs Canada and in partnership with the Comité Diocésain de Développement (CDD) – CARITAS in Cameroon, the LÉGER FOUNDATION is implementing an emergency humanitarian aid project to help displaced people in Cameroon, who are receiving less support in the current humanitarian response, in about 30 villages in Cameroon’s Far North region.

The goal is to improve the resilience, and specifically the living conditions, of 31,300 vulnerable and isolated people. The goal of these concerted actions is to provide essential basic support to displaced people and their host communities. This support includes providing aid and survival items, ensuring long-term and safe access to good drinking water, providing better access to health care, and meeting the food needs of the most vulnerable.

Expected results

  • 15,000 people will have improved access to safe drinking water.
  • 5,000 people will have better access to free health care at the health centres of the CDD – CARITAS.
  • 2,500 people will have improved food conditions through the delivery of enriched porridge for children and training on new nutrition techniques for 500 mothers.
  • 2,500 people can start new kinds of subsistence farming with the distribution of farming technology kits.
  • 2,000 of the most vulnerable people will get access to essential aid items, such as floor mattresses.
  • 2,000 of the most vulnerable people will be better protected against malaria thanks to mosquito nets.
  • 400 families will see an improvement in their livelihoods through support and training for 400 men and women who want to develop income-generating activities.
